Dr. Councelbaum earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of California, San Diego, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She earned her medical degree from the University of Southern California, followed by an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at LA County Hospital / USC Medical Center. In 1987 she became board certified in Internal Medicine, being named a Diplomate by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

In the years following her residency she grew increasingly interested in working with seniors, gaining great experience and expertise with the myriad medical issues of the geriatric population. In 1994, she was awarded the qualification in Geriatric Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and she has maintained her certification. Treating a geriatric population requires patience, caring, and a high degree of medical sophistication. The complex issues of the geriatric population are unique, requiring specialized knowledge.

Prior to joining our staff in 1996, Dr. Councelbaum practiced for several years, gaining extensive experience both in inpatient and outpatient care. Since joining our team, she has continued to gain experience with seniors, along with patients of all ages. Her additional areas of expertise include treating insomnia, cognitive decline in the elderly, lipid disorders, and hypertension.

Dr. Councelbaum lives in Irvine with her husband. She has two children, one of which is an aspiring performer and the other plays on the baseball team at UCLA. She loves to run, exercise, and watch her kids grow.
